1993-white-mazda-protegeI was fifteen years old at the moment of this adventure and if you read my other stories here, you already know that I started my driving career earlier than most kids.

There must be something in my genes that made me crave driving to the point where I’d do almost anything to get my hands on a set of car keys. I guess I was addicted to driving now that I think about it.

It was Tuesday morning around 10am. My sister went to the bathroom to take a shower.  As usual this was my queue to look for her car keys, because she always hid them from me, so I wouldn’t steal her car. I also called my friends John and Freddy to let them know that we’re about to go for a ride.

I searched the usual places, under her pillow, under her mattress, the bed, her closet, and underneath her dresser. Those were some of her favorite spots to hide her keys from me, but on that day she stumped me.

I decided to pull ninja move and sneak into the bathroom, while she’s taking a shower. I used a butter knife to twist the lock open. Then as stealthy as I could, I opened the door and released the door knob ever so slightly, so that it wouldn’t make an audible sound to alert her.

That reminds me, one day I snook into the bathroom with a large pitcher of ice water as she was taking a shower and I dumped it on her. We were notorious to each other back then.

The water was running and my sister took long showers, so I wasn’t terribly worried about the timing. I picked up her fresh set of clothes, and whala, the keys were right below her clothes.

My sisters car was a brand new Mazda Protege, I loved the car because it had the new car scent, a nice stereo that I could play my cassettes mixes in, and a Japanese engine that made the sweetest noises when I raced it around town.

I opened the garage really carefully hoping that I don’t alert her at all. I got into the car and turned on the ignition. Man I remember the feeling, I could feel my heart beat in my chest and a great feeling of happiness and excitement washed over me.

I rolled the car slowly out of the garage and closed the door very quietly by pressing my weight against the door so that it doesn’t make a lot of noise while rolling down the metal tracks. Remember, I was still in ninja mode because I didn’t want my sister to run out or call the cops on me.

I got back into the car and popped in my mix tape.  As I pulled out of the driveway and began traveling on the street, I twisted the volume knob to maximum as Whomp There it is by Tag Team began bumping on the speakers. I felt like I was in heaven. I’m doing my favorite activity, I’m also doing something illegal, and I got my favorite music blasting; it just couldn’t get better than this for me!

I drove to John’s house and he ran to the car smiling from ear to ear. He got in the shotgun seat and I began speeding around his cul-de-sac as the Tag Team ended its concert and various Latin freestyle songs played like Maria by TKA.

I got to Freddy’s house within a few minutes and all of us probably looked like the happiest fifteen year olds in the world.

Freddy asked why were we wearing seatbelts and I told him that this car had automatic seatbelts. They were pretty cool actually, because as soon as you sat in the car and turned the keys in the ignition, the belt would automatically fasten you in.  Good safety option.

We went to a pay phone to call my friend Adam to see if Greg wanted to race his Audi 5000 against me again and reclaim his title. I beat Greg racing around Adam’s neighborhood a few months ago. It was a great story too, but I’ll save that for another day. Adam said that Greg went to the beach so we decided to cruise around a bit.

Back then I drove like a maniac; I mean seriously I think I thought I was a race car driver or something. Almost every time I drove I hit triple digit speeds and took corners at such high speed that I skidded around them no matter what car I was driving. I just loved driving. Cars to me were like go carts, except much faster.

My friend John was a nut too. He opened the moon roof and released his seatbelt so that he could hang his head out the roof while I was speeding around familiar neighborhoods.

Soon a good song came on the radio and it amped me up. Music has a habit of making me drive more daringly. We’re all sing at the top of our lungs in the car and John is screaming the songs out the roof. Just imagine if you saw a little Mazda cruise past you on a warm sunny day with a whole bunch of teenagers wilding out. What a sight it must have been, but not as interesting as the sight that the neighborhood was going to see soon.

I was on this street with a steep hill that I was racing upwards on. When I say racing I mean, I was flooring the hell out of the car, even though I knew there was a turn ahead. John still had his head hanging out of the roof too.

I got the little car up to 105mph when the hill flattened out and before I knew it I noticed a ton of signs with the yellow arrows on it pointing to the left. I slammed on the breaks as hard as I could because I was going way to fast to make the turn.

John luckily got back into the car and was better prepared for what happened next. You know how they say that when something bad is going to happen, everything goes in slow motion? Well it’s true!!!

As I’m taking the corner with the tire screeching like crazy, the whole front passenger wheel rips off the car and rolls with crazy velocity towards a house. Can you imagine what I was thinking when this happened? Well I remember, I was actually thinking okay it’s not that bad, I can explain this but….

The car immediately drops where the tire was and I no longer had a shot of making that corner at all! The car rips apart a front lawn and creates a wave of dirt that sprays the right side of the car as I continued with all my might to brake and turn left.

Keep in mind that this all probably happened in like a second or two but time for me was going super slow. I could think and contemplate things during this nightmare but I couldn’t avoid what was going to happen next.

This was a bad corner apparently, a city bus crashed into a fire hydrant at this corner, but I‘m sure he wasn’t trying to slow down from a 100 during their accident. Anyways, the city installed a 10” steel pipe that was 4 feet tall and about 3 feet before the fire hydrant so I wasn’t going to hit the hydrant oh no, I’m lucky.

Instead I wrap the front end of my sisters brand new car around that sturdy yellow pole after I mowed down a no parking sign that went down like a tooth pick. The car stopped suddenly, it was a very very frightening and a surreal experience.

I looked over at John, all though he didn’t get decapitated since he sat down before the accident, he still flew out of the seat because he took his belt off and cracked the window wearing only a baseball cap.

All of us were in shock, we just looked at each other and I remember my ears ringing like crazy. People began swarming out of their houses because the accident must have sounded extremely loud.

Everyone looked okay including me, but knowing what I just did I knew I wouldn’t be okay. I thought about running but I had no way to explain the car keys which I couldn’t pull out of the ignition anyway. I told the guys that I’m going to stay and they ran to avoid being arrested.

People walked over to me as I examined the damage to the car. Oh my God, what have I done? My sisters car looked like the incredible hulk took a telephone pole and hit it dead center. The windshield was crashed, and one of the tires was resting before the front door of a house. I couldn’t believe how stupid I was to do what I did. I felt so ashamed and worried about what my parents were going to do to me, and how my sister was going to take the news.

I asked one of the old people, who’s lawn I destroyed if I could use their phone. I called my sister and told her the news. She freaked out and threatened to kill me after she confirmed her car wasn’t in the garage. I hung up because she just kept swearing and screaming.

The cops came and I admitted to them that I was only fifteen. They asked me if I was okay then they put me in the back seat of the cop car. I remember wishing that I could just go back in time, I still couldn’t believe what just happened, it was just so horrible.

The cop drove me to my house and my sister ran from the front door at me. The cop stopped her and told her to calm down. I could tell that my sister was having a break down but somehow the cop got her to calm down.

The cop also told her that she needs to press charges on me if she wants her insurance to pay for the damage. So she did and I got a promise to appear in Juvenile court.

I asked the cop if this would affect me getting my license and he said most likely it would, I was only 2 months way from getting it, I was devastated again.

The rest is a blur, I remember my parents screaming at me and me possibly getting my ass whooped on top of hearing that I’m the worst child ever and that I shouldn’t have been born in the first place because all I do is cause the family problems.

I felt horrible, but I was learning to turn off the verbal abuse since I’ve been hearing it for so long. Every time I did something bad, I would hear the same jargon and I admit it made me feel like I was always alone in the world with no one on my side but myself.

Well if I could do it all over again, I would have never taken my sisters car that day. I made a lot of mistakes when I was younger, and I hope to help someone going through life problems by sharing my stories and hopefully letting them know that now when I look back at my moments, I do regret the things I did. Don’t get sucked into doing things that may seem cool but deep down, you know there’s consequences. Trust me, I would live a totally different life if I could just turn back the hands of time.

I’m going to post more stories soon… and I’m looking forward to reading yours on here!
