The Day We Blew Up Our School!

Attention: open in a new window. E-mail

school explosion m100So it was the fourth of July and me and my friends had some mischievous ideas of what we should do that day. My friend Freddy had gotten a few sticks of m100's from his buddy; who just came back from a firework shopping spree. He called me up and I met Freddy at Todd's house in Springfield.

I was only fifteen then, so I walked the mile to Ryan's house to meet up with Freddy, Ryan, Mike, and Todd. Todd's dad was a drinker, he would always be passed out on the couch dressed only in his underwear. What a sight, he looked like Al from the Home Improvement show with Tim Allen. Anyway, since Todd's dad was a drinker, we always had a generous supply of cheap no name beer to enjoy until the juices began flowing in our deviant minds.

We all had a couple of bruiskies and decided that we need to do something fun, because it was so boring that day. I think it was about 8 o'clock when we came up with the plan to break out some windows in the old abandoned school and throw the fireworks in. Todd and Ryan, who were bothers,  immediately decided not to come and I sure didn't blame them. I think the only reason I went, was to uphold my persona of the crazy kid that did crazy things.

Well all three of us began walking to the school, which was about 30 minutes away from Todd's house. Once we got to the school, we scoped the area to make sure that no one was around to see our stunt except us. Mr. Freddie decided that he would be the quarterback and throw the rocks through the window first, because he had a good arm. Once Fred broke the first window, we all joined in and broke one of our own. Then Freddie who had the best aim lit the m100's one at a time, and threw them inside the school. It wasn't long before three was a big Die Hard flash in the windows openings and then all the remaining windows blew out. It was so freakin loud, that immediately my heart started racing, because my mind switched from having fun to I gotta get the hell out of here as soon as possible, because I don't want to get caught!

The fire alarm rang in the school immediately and soon we heard sirens. We ran into a nearby wooded area to hide from the police cars and fire trucks, who were getting to the scene. We were in the woods for at least an hour, when we decided that it may be safe to come out. As soon as we started walking, we saw a cruiser combing the streets with a spotlight pointed at shady areas. We decided to run back to the woods, because it was our best bet to get away.

It was dark and soon the official fourth of July firework show began to make its ruckus in our city. Once the show began, we walked back to Todd's house, knowing that it has to be safe to walk back now, because its been close to 2 hours since we witnessed our own version of Die Hard.

Once we were in reach of Todd's house we saw him on his porch and he walked up to us along with his brother Ryan. "You guys are freakin crazy, I heard the m100's go off over here" he said. He mentioned how he saw cops drive even around his neighborhood, almost immediately after the event.

Growing up I did a lot of stupid things or maybe I should rephrase that, I was around when my friends were doing a lot of crazy things. This however was not my proudest moment, because I didn't really want to go with them, but I didn't want to look like a chicken either in front of my closest friends. Nowadays, with the war on terror and stuff; I wouldn't even think of doing anything close to this stupid.

If you're a kid who's hanging with what your parents may call the wrong crowd, read more of my stories to find out how hanging with the wrong crowd was not the coolest thing in the long run for me.
